What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure of body fat based on height and weight. It was devised by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s and is widely used by healthcare professionals as a screening tool for weight categories.

BMI Formula

Metric: BMI = weight (kg) รท height (m)ยฒ

Imperial: BMI = (weight (lb) ร— 703) รท height (in)ยฒ

BMI Categories (WHO)

CategoryBMI Range
UnderweightBelow 18.5
Normal weight18.5 โ€“ 24.9
Overweight25.0 โ€“ 29.9

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat. BMI should be used as a general guideline, not a definitive diagnosis. Consult a healthcare professional for a complete health assessment.
